Tom poses with the Olympic bell, which tolled during the opening ceremonies at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. It is now on display outside the Olympic stadium there. The bell, which was originally mounted in a special 220-foot bell tower, weighs 10.6 tons. In 1945, advancing Allied troops shot at the bell, leaving the gaping hole seen here, and then dynamited the tower. The bell came crashing to the ground and is now scarred and cracked, obviously from the long fall.
